The spotlight will shine on Luke Poulter this September as the 21-year-old golfer earns his place in the Great Britain and Ireland squad for the prestigious Walker Cup. The biennial contest against the United States will be staged at the iconic Cypress Point in California from September 6 to 7.

Poulter, son of Ryder Cup legend Ian Poulter, has carved out his own path in the amateur ranks with a series of standout performances. Earlier this summer, he delivered 3.5 points in GB&I’s victory over the Continent of Europe at the St Andrews Trophy. His growing reputation was further cemented by a strong showing at the US Amateur, a narrow miss at US Open qualifying after a playoff, and a breakthrough collegiate win with the Florida Gators at the Schenkel Invitational.

This year’s Walker Cup carries extra weight for Great Britain and Ireland, who are determined to end a difficult run. The team’s last triumph came a decade ago at Royal Lytham and St Annes in 2015. Since then, the United States has dominated, securing four consecutive wins. The chance to turn the tide now rests with captain Dean Robertson, the former European Tour winner leading the 10-man squad.

Joining Poulter are Cameron Adam, Elliot Baker, Dominic Clemons, Charlie Forster, Connor Graham, Stuart Grehan, Niall Shiels Donegan, Gavin Tiernan and Tyler Weaver. Caolan Rafferty has been named as the team’s reserve.

For Ian Poulter, a Ryder Cup stalwart who represented Europe in seven editions between 2004 and 2021, seeing his son step into the international spotlight adds another chapter to the family’s golfing story. For Luke, however, the Walker Cup is more than just heritage — it is his opportunity to help Great Britain and Ireland reclaim one of amateur golf’s greatest prizes.
