Nigerian sprint star Favour Ofili has booked her spot in the Diamond League Final for the very first time after an impressive showing in Lausanne that highlighted her steady rise on the global stage.
The 21-year-old, who has maintained outstanding form this season, secured her qualification in the women’s 200m by running 22.31 seconds to claim second place. She finished just behind American Olympic bronze medalist Brittany Brown, who took the victory in 22.23 seconds.
That performance earned Ofili seven points, bringing her tally to 13 overall, enough to guarantee her place in the Zurich final. She will now compete for the Diamond Trophy and a top prize of $30,000 against some of the world’s best sprinters, including Brown, Shericka Jackson, Dina Asher-Smith, Amy Hunt, Anavia Battle, and McKenzie Long.
While Ofili celebrated her breakthrough, fellow Nigerian Tobi Amusan endured a more difficult outing in Lausanne, finishing fifth in the women’s 100m hurdles. Despite the setback, the world record holder remains in strong contention as she prepares to chase her fourth Diamond League title in Zurich.
Amusan’s event, the 100m hurdles, is one of the premium Diamond+ Disciplines, which comes with an elevated $50,000 prize for the winner. A victory would see her equal the record for the most Diamond League titles in the hurdles, further cementing her place among the sport’s greats.
With Ofili set to make her Diamond League Final debut and Amusan aiming for yet another title, Nigerian fans have every reason to be excited as the Zurich finals promise to deliver an electrifying climax to the athletics season.
