Chelsea Extend Unbeaten WSL Run, but Title Slip Continues After Liverpool Draw

Chelsea’s historic unbeaten run in the Women’s Super League hit 34 games on Sunday, yet the Blues were unable to close the gap on Manchester City after a 1-1 draw at Liverpool.

Manchester City, who had beaten Manchester United 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, maintain a three-point lead over Chelsea, who had hoped to reduce the deficit with a win. Alyssa Thompson gave Chelsea an early advantage with a superb curling finish in the ninth minute, only for Beata Olsson to equalise for Liverpool on the counter in the 33rd minute.

Chelsea continued to press, with Catarina Macario missing a notable opportunity before half-time. In the second half, Aggie Beever-Jones appeared to have put Chelsea ahead, rounding Liverpool goalkeeper Faye Kirby, but her goal was ruled offside. A later chipped effort from Beever-Jones went narrowly wide as Chelsea dominated possession, yet they were unable to find the winner, marking a second consecutive draw after last week’s 1-1 stalemate with Arsenal.

The result leaves Chelsea three points behind City, while maintaining a four-point cushion over Manchester United. Arsenal and Tottenham occupy fourth and fifth ahead of their North London derby later on Sunday.

Elsewhere in the league, the London City Lionesses surged up the table, defeating Aston Villa 3-1 away, with Saki Kumagai scoring twice and Isobel Goodwin also on target. Villa’s Kirsty Hanson scored a consolation as her team fell to eighth after Brighton overwhelmed Leicester City 4-1 at the Amex Stadium. Madison Haley, Maelys Mpome, Marisa Olislagers, and Kiko Seike scored for Brighton, handing Leicester an unwanted record of 21 consecutive away matches without a win – surpassing Yeovil Town’s previous mark of 20 set between 2017 and 2019.

West Ham climbed off the bottom of the table for the first time this season with a 3-1 victory over Everton. An early strike by Anouk Denton was followed by goals from Amber Tysiak and Shekiera Martinez, giving the Irons a comfortable lead before Katja Snoeijs scored a late consolation for Everton.

Record-Breaking Streak
Chelsea now hold the longest unbeaten run in WSL history, surpassing their previous record of 33 matches without defeat set between 2019 and 2021.
