Vinicius Jr Confirms He Won’t Extend Real Madrid Contract Amid Strained Relations with Xabi Alonso

Real Madrid winger Vinicius Junior has reportedly told club officials that he does not plan to renew his contract, citing ongoing tensions with head coach Xabi Alonso as a key factor.

The Brazilian’s current deal runs until the summer of 2027, but sources say he personally communicated his decision to club president Florentino Perez during a private meeting late last month.

Renewal discussions began in January but stalled after the player and the club failed to agree on financial terms and conditions related to his role under Alonso.

The relationship between Vinicius and Alonso has been tense, notably during Madrid’s 2-1 Clasico victory over Barcelona on October 26. Vinicius reacted angrily after being substituted in the 72nd minute, stormed off the pitch, and initially ignored the coach. He later apologised and met with Perez to discuss both the incident and his future at the club.

According to The Athletic, Vinicius confirmed in that meeting that extending his contract was not the right decision under the current circumstances. Sources close to the player say his hesitation remains tied to his strained relationship with Alonso.

Tensions first surfaced following Madrid’s 4-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup semi-final in July, when Alonso had initially intended to bench Vinicius. An injury to Trent Alexander-Arnold forced the Brazilian onto the right wing instead.

Since that match, Vinicius has featured in only five of Real Madrid’s 17 games across all competitions. He has started on the bench in four league matches and was listed among the substitutes during Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Elche.
