Robin Smith, former England batsman renowned for his fearless strokeplay and signature square cut shot, has died at the age of 62, his family has confirmed. Smith represented England in 62 Test matches and 71 one-day internationals between 1988 and 1996, including as part of the squad that finished runners-up in the 1992 Cricket World Cup.

The family said: “It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Robin Arnold Smith, beloved father of Harrison and Margaux, and cherished brother of Christopher. He passed unexpectedly at his South Perth home on 1 December. The cause of death is currently unknown.”

Born in Durban, South Africa, Smith moved to England in 1983 to play for Hampshire, where he became a county cricket legend. Over a 17-year career, he amassed 18,984 runs and earned a reputation as one of Hampshire’s finest players. Hampshire chairman Rod Bransgrove described him as “one of the greatest, if not the greatest, Hampshire cricket heroes of all time.”

Making his England debut five years after joining Hampshire, Smith averaged 43.67 in Tests, compiling nine centuries and 28 fifties, with a highest score of 175 against a formidable West Indies attack in 1994. In ODIs, his unbeaten 167 against Australia in 1993 stood as an England record for 23 years. Nicknamed “The Judge,” Smith’s back-foot prowess and fearlessness against fast bowling earned him admiration worldwide.

ECB chair Richard Thompson said: “Robin Smith faced the fastest bowlers with courage and skill, giving England fans unforgettable moments. His 167 not out against Australia epitomised his extraordinary talent.”

Smith remained engaged with cricket after retirement, recently visiting the England Lions squad in Perth. He had openly struggled with mental health and alcohol issues, which his family emphasized should not be assumed to relate to his death.

Tributes have poured in from cricketing colleagues. Nasser Hussain said: “There was no fear in him. He took on the fastest bowlers with unmatched skill and poise.” Michael Atherton added: “Robin was a phenomenal teammate, giving everything for the team. A truly remarkable cricketer and gentleman.”

Robin Smith leaves a lasting legacy as one of England cricket’s most courageous and respected figures.
