Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman has declared that Nigeria’s primary focus is winning the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and reclaiming continental glory.

The Atalanta forward made the remarks following Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a penalty shootout loss to DR Congo in the final play-off in Rabat, Morocco.

Speaking to Elegbete TV Sports, Lookman acknowledged the disappointment of missing the World Cup but said the team is determined to channel that setback into a strong AFCON campaign.

“It’s exciting. Obviously, it’s another competition for us to go out there and prove ourselves once again, so it’s a pleasure to have that pressure on us. We are happy to be here,” he said.

Reflecting on the recent AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire, where Nigeria finished as runners-up, Lookman emphasized the importance of squad unity and togetherness. “Last time in Abidjan, we came so close but didn’t win. Keeping the togetherness and unity we have in the squad is very important for us. It’s what keeps us going,” he added.

The winger highlighted that consistent quality on the pitch and collective effort will be essential to achieving success in the upcoming tournament. “We have to show quality in our games and show togetherness in our fight. We have that in this team, and once it all comes together, things will be great,” Lookman concluded.
