Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has been appointed the team’s new assistant captain and first-choice penalty taker ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Galatasaray forward will serve as deputy to Wilfred Ndidi, who was officially named captain last week following the retirement of long-time skipper William Troost-Ekong. Troost-Ekong previously held responsibility for spot-kicks before stepping away from international football.
The leadership changes mark a fresh phase for the Super Eagles as they restructure the squad hierarchy in preparation for AFCON 2025. Osimhen’s elevation reflects his growing influence within the team and his consistent contributions on and off the pitch.
Alex Iwobi and Moses Simon remain among the most experienced members of the squad, having represented Nigeria at senior level for nearly a decade. Iwobi is currently the most capped player in the team, with Simon close behind.
According to reports by SCORENigeria, Osimhen was selected for the assistant captaincy role due to his unwavering commitment, leadership qualities, and passion whenever he represents the national side.
The decision further underlines Osimhen’s importance to Nigeria’s ambitions as the Super Eagles intensify preparations for the continental tournament.
