Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface is set to undergo surgery to address a persistent knee injury, sources report.

The Nigeria international, currently on a season-long loan at Werder Bremen from Bayer Leverkusen, has struggled with fitness throughout the campaign. He has played just 326 minutes this season and has yet to complete a full 90 minutes for Bremen.

According to German publication BILD, Leverkusen’s medical team has recommended surgical intervention after the injury, sustained during a training session in early December, failed to improve. Initially deemed minor, the knee issue has continued to hamper the striker’s performance.

Leverkusen’s sporting director, Simon Rolfes, and Werder Bremen’s sporting director, Clemens Fritz, are reportedly in talks to coordinate the player’s treatment before Christmas.

Boniface, who has previously endured two cruciate ligament injuries, faces the likelihood of missing the remainder of the season should he proceed with surgery.
