American tennis sensation Learner Tien emerged victorious at the 2025 Next Gen ATP Finals, defeating Belgian Alexander Blockx in straight sets, 4-3(4), 4-2, 4-1, to capture the year-ending tournament for players aged 20 and under. This win comes a year after Tien finished as runner-up in the same event.
Tien overcame an early setback, having lost his opening match in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to Rafael Jodar in a tightly contested five-set encounter. He quickly regained form, winning his next two matches to reach the semifinals, where he defeated fellow American Nishesh Basavareddy in straight sets to secure his place in the final.
In Sunday’s final, Tien displayed exceptional composure and precision, committing only 12 unforced errors compared to Blockx’s 23, and closing out the match in under an hour. Despite Blockx serving seven aces to Tien’s one, the American effectively countered with well-timed lobs and drive volleys, ultimately prevailing in all three sets.
“I knew it was going to be a tough match,” Tien said after the final. “Blockx didn’t miss a serve for the first set-and-a-half and has been playing really well all week.”
Blockx, ranked 116th, made an aggressive start, targeting Tien’s backhand and charging the net, but Tien, ranked 28th in the world, maintained composure and leveraged his forehand to dictate rallies. After pushing the first set into a tiebreak, Tien outplayed his opponent, taking control in the second set with a crucial break and dominating the third to seal victory.
The win adds to an impressive 2025 campaign for Tien, who recorded five wins over top-10 ranked players this year, including a straight-sets triumph over world No. 2 Alexander Zverev in February. At the trophy presentation, Blockx praised the champion, saying, “There are not many days I feel helpless on court, but today was one of them. You’re just too good.”
Blockx had entered the tournament unbeaten until the final, dropping only two sets in earlier rounds against Justin Engel of Germany and Croatia’s Dino Prizmic. Despite his strong performance throughout, he was unable to match Tien’s consistency and composure in the decisive match.
Tien’s triumph at the Next Gen ATP Finals marks another milestone in his burgeoning career, highlighting his ability to recover from early setbacks and dominate high-pressure matches.
