Egypt came close to recording their first-ever FIFA World Cup victory before a second-half own goal handed Belgium a draw.
Egypt were denied what would have been a historic FIFA World Cup victory after Belgium secured a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw during their Group G opener.
Egypt took the lead in the 19th minute through Emam Ashour, who scored his first international goal after receiving a pass from Mohamed Salah.
The North African side maintained their advantage for much of the game and appeared on course for their first World Cup win before Belgium responded in the second half.
Belgium’s equaliser came shortly after Romelu Lukaku entered the match, with Egypt defender Mohamed Hany turning the ball into his own net during the pressure that followed.
The result leaves Egypt still searching for a first-ever World Cup victory, despite a performance that drew attention for its organisation and attacking threat against one of Europe’s established football nations.
Both sides created further chances late in the match, but neither team found a winner before full time.
Egypt will continue their Group G campaign against New Zealand, while Belgium face Iran in their next fixture.
