Tensions are running high as Oleksandr Usyk and Daniel Dubois prepare to meet again in the boxing ring. Just days ahead of their highly anticipated rematch, the two heavyweights engaged in a heated shouting match during a face-off event at the OVO Arena Wembley, a confrontation that has since gone viral on social media. The fiery exchange adds fuel to a bout already steeped in drama and anticipation.
Their first encounter, which took place in Wrocław, Poland, on August 26, 2023, ended in controversy. Usyk retained his heavyweight titles with a ninth-round stoppage, but not before a contentious moment in the fifth round when Dubois landed a body shot that was deemed a low blow by referee Luis Pabon. That decision sparked widespread debate and became the primary catalyst for this rematch, with Dubois insisting he was wronged and demanding another chance to dethrone the Ukrainian champion.
Now, almost two years later, the pair are set to clash once more this time at Wembley Stadium on July 19, 2025. Usyk, holding the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO belts, enters the ring undefeated and determined to defend his crown. Dubois, on the other hand, is seeking both redemption and validation, hoping to overturn the outcome of their previous meeting and make a statement on one of boxing’s biggest stages.
Outside the ropes, Usyk has remained vocal about the war in his homeland. Having arrived in London ahead of the bout, he took time to speak publicly about the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. On July 14, he appeared in Trafalgar Square alongside British entrepreneur Richard Branson for the unveiling of a replica Ukrainian mosaic, originally created in Mariupol in 1967 and damaged during the Russian attacks. Usyk addressed the crowd with emotion, denouncing the destruction caused by Russia and offering a message of hope and resilience. “Russia destroyed hospitals. Russia destroyed schools. Russia destroyed the lives of Ukrainians,” he said. “But we will survive. We will rebuild our country, like a mosaic, piece by piece.”
Usyk’s comments echo his longstanding outspokenness about the war. In June, he challenged former U.S. President Donald Trump to witness the crisis firsthand by inviting him to live in Ukraine for a week, citing the nightly bombings and constant fear faced by civilians. His activism has become an integral part of his public identity, complementing his accomplishments inside the ring.
The upcoming fight is also significant given Usyk’s recent triumphs. In 2024, he secured back-to-back victories against Tyson Fury, capturing and defending the WBC title in the process. With that, he unified the WBA, WBO, and WBC belts, cementing his place among the sport’s greats. Now, as he prepares to defend his titles once again, Dubois stands in the way a fighter hungry for a comeback and desperate to change the narrative.
Looking further ahead, Tyson Fury has already announced a trilogy bout with Usyk scheduled for April 18, 2026, also at Wembley Stadium. But for now, all eyes remain on July 19. The shouting match may have grabbed headlines, but it’s only a glimpse of the intensity both fighters will bring to the ring when the bell rings.
