Australia’s Jake Matthews produced a clinical performance at UFC Nashville, dispatching Nigeria’s Chidi Njokuani via rear-naked choke just 69 seconds into their welterweight contest.

The highly anticipated showdown, staged on the preliminary card at the Bridgestone Arena, ended swiftly as Matthews took control of the fight from the opening exchange. Njokuani, known for his dynamic striking and knockout power, came out aggressive, attempting to impose his Muay Thai pedigree with a flurry of early kicks.

But Matthews, undeterred, timed his entry perfectly. He closed the distance, forced the fight to the canvas, and wasted no time transitioning to the Nigerian-American’s back. Within seconds, the 30-year-old locked in a rear-naked choke that left Njokuani with limited options. Despite a brief scramble, the pressure was too much, forcing a tap at the 1:09 mark of Round 1.

The loss marks a major setback for Njokuani, 36, who was riding a three-fight winning streak heading into the bout, including a standout second-round knockout of Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos earlier this year. With a UFC record now standing at 5-4, the defeat could stall his recent momentum in the crowded welterweight division.

Born in Lagos but based in the United States, Njokuani had drawn growing support from Nigerian fight fans, many of whom viewed him as a potential title contender in the near future. That momentum, however, has now been disrupted.

For Matthews, the victory not only extends his current win streak to three but also improves his overall MMA record to 22 wins and 7 losses (15-7 in the UFC). It was a statement performance for the Australian, who continues to establish himself as a dangerous grappler in the division.

As for Njokuani, attention now shifts to what comes next. While a title push may be out of reach for the time being, analysts believe a measured comeback against a mid-tier opponent could provide the reset he needs.
