LeBron James Considered Mavericks Exit Before Committing to Final Lakers Season

Basketball

LeBron James was nearly on the move this offseason, with the Dallas Mavericks emerging as a serious option before the four-time NBA champion opted to stay with the Los Angeles Lakers for the final year of his contract.

Despite producing another standout campaign last season—averaging 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists—James’ long-term commitment to the Lakers wasn’t guaranteed. Sources close to the situation, including The Athletic’s John Hollinger via Sportal, indicated that James had shown interest in joining Dallas, where he would have linked up with Kyrie Irving and potentially played alongside 2025’s top draft pick, Cooper Flagg.

The prospect of reuniting with Irving and Anthony Davis, as well as mentoring a rising star, made the Mavericks an appealing destination. However, James ultimately chose not to walk away from the $52 million owed to him under his current contract with the Lakers. Signing with another team via the non-taxpayer mid-level exception or a similar deal would have meant a steep financial sacrifice—one he was unwilling to make.

A potential buyout scenario was also ruled out, further solidifying James’ decision to remain in Los Angeles. Though rumors persist about his retirement, the 39-year-old star—set to turn 41 in December—will return for a 22nd NBA season since entering the league as the top overall pick in 2003.

James’ decision not only preserves continuity for the Lakers but also delays what could have been one of the most sensational player moves of the offseason. As the next season approaches, all eyes remain on how the veteran leader will shape what might be his final campaign in the league.
