Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has addressed growing scrutiny over his continued interest in players from Premier League rivals Chelsea, reaffirming that his transfer policy is based solely on player quality and suitability.
The latest example is Noni Madueke, who is set to join the Gunners in a £52 million move from Stamford Bridge. His arrival makes him the eighth Chelsea player signed during Arteta’s reign — a trend that has sparked criticism from some Arsenal fans still disappointed by Raheem Sterling’s lacklustre loan spell last season.
However, Arteta remained unfazed by the backlash, explaining that the club’s recruitment decisions are driven by performance metrics, not rival affiliations.
“We focus on the profile, not the badge. Chelsea have a large pool of talented players — if one of them fits our needs, we go for it,” Arteta told reporters.
“We’re very excited about Noni. He needs a short break, but we’ll have him with us soon, and I believe fans will see exactly why we brought him in.”
As Arsenal gear up for another Premier League title push after finishing second for three consecutive seasons, reinforcements are arriving across the pitch.
The club is also on the verge of sealing a €73.5 million (£63.5 million) deal for Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyökeres. The Swedish forward is expected to finally resolve Arsenal’s long-standing striker dilemma and significantly boost their attacking options.
Arteta is reportedly keen on refreshing his midfield and frontline as part of a broader squad rebuild, with Madueke and Gyökeres forming a key part of that vision.
