South Africa is set to welcome back two of its most experienced leaders, Temba Bavuma and Aiden Markram, for a high-stakes white-ball series in Australia this August—signalling a renewed push toward World Cup preparation.
Bavuma, who has been sidelined since lifting the World Test Championship trophy at Lord’s in June due to a hamstring injury, returns to captain the ODI squad. Markram, meanwhile, will lead the T20I side after being rested for the recent Zimbabwe tour and tri-nation T20 series that included New Zealand.
Their return couldn’t be better timed. With the T20 World Cup looming next year and the 50-over World Cup on home soil in 2027, South Africa is focused on sharpening its squad depth and reinforcing leadership. Head coach Shukri Conrad acknowledged their importance, calling them “a vital part of the group” as the team works toward building consistency in both formats.
“It’s great to have our senior players back in the mix,” Conrad said. “Every series from now plays a part in shaping our squads for the big tournaments. And there’s no tougher test than facing Australia in their own backyard.”
While the return of seasoned campaigners brings stability, South Africa is also injecting fresh energy into the squad. Off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen has received his first-ever call-up in both white-ball formats after impressing in the Test arena and leading the Dolphins to a One-Day Cup title earlier this year. Also breaking into the ODI side is explosive batter Lhuan-dre Pretorius, who made his Test and T20I debut in Zimbabwe last month. Dewald Brevis, another young talent who earned his Test cap recently, finds himself in both limited-overs squads as well.
The selection also reflects a core group of players being trusted across formats, with Markram, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Tristan Stubbs, Ryan Rickelton, Corbin Bosch, and Nandre Burger named in both squads. Their dual presence signals a strategy of continuity and familiarity, especially as the Proteas look to build a settled nucleus heading into tournament season.
The Australian tour kicks off with three T20Is on August 10, 12, and 16, followed by three ODIs on August 19, 22, and 24—matches that promise to test South Africa’s resilience in challenging conditions.
