Northern Superchargers kicked off their campaign in The Hundred 2025 with a confident victory over Welsh Fire, fueled by a brilliant unbeaten 67 from Zak Crawley and a disciplined bowling performance that kept the opposition in check.

Chasing a target of 144 runs, the Superchargers looked comfortable throughout their innings. Dawid Malan and Crawley set the tone early with a solid 91-run opening partnership that laid the foundation for the win. Crawley, in particular, was in fine form, smashing five fours and four sixes in his 38-ball knock, effortlessly turning the chase in his team’s favor.

But the match was firmly put out of Welsh Fire’s reach thanks to Northern Superchargers’ bowlers. Opting to field first, the Superchargers struck early breakthroughs that disrupted Welsh Fire’s momentum. Matthew Potts was the standout, removing Steve Smith and Luke Wells in consecutive deliveries, a turning point that put the batting side under pressure.

Despite a promising 62-run opening stand between Jonny Bairstow and Smith, Welsh Fire struggled to build on that platform. Bairstow’s dismissal for 42 triggered a middle-order collapse, with Adil Rashid and Imad Wasim each chipping in with two wickets. Welsh Fire finished their 100-ball innings at 143 for 9, falling just short of the target.

In the chase, Malan provided a steady start, but Crawley quickly took control, launching a six over deep backward square leg and following it with a boundary, keeping the required run rate well within reach. Riley Meredith’s brief burst, which saw the dismissals of Malan and Michael Pepper, was not enough to turn the tide.

Captain Harry Brook’s entrance marked the end of any comeback hopes for Welsh Fire. He hit a six off his very first ball and remained unbeaten on 25 from 15 deliveries, helping seal the win with 11 balls to spare alongside Crawley.

Northern Superchargers’ comprehensive performance underlines their intent to be strong contenders in The Hundred 2025, with both batting and bowling firing on all cylinders in their opening match.
