England have drafted left-arm spinner Liam Dawson into their squad for the fourth Test against India at Old Trafford, following the injury-enforced withdrawal of Shoaib Bashir.

Bashir, who played a pivotal role in England’s dramatic 22-run win at Lord’s on Monday, sustained a fractured finger while attempting to field a straight drive during the third day of the match. Scans later confirmed the injury, ruling the 20-year-old out of the remaining two Tests of the five-match series.

In response, the selectors have recalled Dawson, 35, to the national setup for the first time in over eight years. The Hampshire all-rounder last played a Test in 2017 and has featured in only three red-ball internationals for England. However, he brings recent form and experience to the squad, having claimed 21 wickets in the current County Championship season.

“Liam Dawson deserves his call-up,” said England men’s national selector Luke Wright. “He has been in excellent form for Hampshire and consistently delivers quality performances.”

England lead the series 2-1 after a tense finish at Lord’s, where Bashir took the final wicket to secure the win. The fourth Test begins on Wednesday, July 23.

While Dawson joins the 14-man squad, it remains uncertain whether he will make the playing XI. England also have spin options in Jacob Bethell and Rehan Ahmed, while fast bowlers Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue remain in contention. Meanwhile, seamers Sam Cook and Jamie Overton have returned to their counties for red-ball duty.

The decision to bring Dawson back highlights England’s intent to maintain their momentum heading into a decisive encounter against a strong Indian side. With the series still open, the hosts will be eager to seal the series in Manchester before heading into the final Test.
