Arsenal kicked off their Champions League campaign in style with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Athletic Club in Bilbao, thanks to second-half goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard.
For much of the night, the Gunners found it difficult to unlock the Spanish side’s defense. Clear-cut chances were limited, and Athletic looked comfortable until manager Mikel Arteta reshaped his attack with key substitutions. Summer arrivals Viktor Gyökeres and Eberechi Eze added fresh energy, setting the stage for Arsenal’s breakthrough.
Just seconds after entering the pitch in the 72nd minute, Martinelli pounced on a perfectly weighted ball from Trossard to fire Arsenal ahead. Barely a few minutes later, the Brazilian turned provider, squaring for Trossard to finish clinically and double the advantage.
The quick-fire goals not only sealed the win but also underlined Arsenal’s growing depth in attack, with substitutes making the decisive difference.
The result gives the Premier League side three points to open their European campaign and extends their solid defensive run, having conceded only once across all competitions this season.
Arsenal will now shift focus to their next heavyweight clash, as they prepare to welcome Manchester City in what promises to be a crucial early-season showdown.
