Nigeria’s Flying Eagles endured a frustrating start to their 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup journey after falling 1-0 to Norway in their opening group match on Monday night.
The much-anticipated clash saw the West Africans enter as favorites, but it was the Europeans who struck first. Just nine minutes into the game, Norway were awarded a penalty which Rasmus Holten calmly converted to give his side an early advantage.
Despite Nigeria’s attempts to fight back, the Flying Eagles found it difficult to break down Norway’s compact defense. Their attacking rhythm was stifled by the Norwegians’ high press, leaving the young Nigerians with few chances to test the goalkeeper.
As the clock ticked down, Nigeria pushed forward in search of an equalizer, but Norway stood firm, frustrating every late surge and holding on to secure all three points.
The result leaves the Flying Eagles in a tough position as they look ahead to their remaining group fixtures. Nigeria, who earned qualification to the tournament after winning bronze at the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations earlier this year, will now face Saudi Arabia on Friday, October 3, 2025, in a crucial second game.
With Colombia also in the group, Coach Ladan Bosso’s side must rediscover their form quickly to keep their hopes of advancing to the knockout stage alive.
