Benfica manager Jose Mourinho has openly criticized parts of his squad for “betraying” him, even as the team secured a 2-0 victory over Atletico CP in the fourth-round cup clash.

After the match, Mourinho revealed he had contemplated making up to nine substitutions at halftime but ultimately chose to replace only four players. The Portuguese tactician said the changes were instrumental in maintaining the team’s intensity and focus.

“I couldn’t have played the first 45 minutes without making substitutions, so I opted for four. They changed the game with their energy and commitment,” Mourinho told RTP.

One standout during the game was young forward Rodrigo Rego, who remained on the pitch for the entire first half. Mourinho praised the player’s reliability and potential, noting that while he could not predict how the youngster would perform, he was confident Rego would not disappoint.

“He will continue to feature. I can’t say if he’ll start next Tuesday, but I am closely monitoring our youth players. One thing I knew about him is that he wouldn’t let me down. I don’t like players who let me down,” Mourinho said.

The comments reflect Mourinho’s high standards for commitment and performance, as well as his focus on nurturing emerging talent within Benfica’s ranks.
