Nigeria’s bid to return to the FIFA World Cup ended in heartbreak on Monday as the Super Eagles were defeated by the Democratic Republic of Congo in the African playoff final.
The tense encounter, overseen by head coach Éric Chelle, finished 1-1 after 120 minutes of physically draining football. With neither side able to find a winner in extra time, the match proceeded to penalties, where DR Congo edged Nigeria 4-3 to secure their place at the 2026 Mundial.
The result confirms that the Super Eagles will miss a second consecutive World Cup—an outcome that has stirred disappointment across the country.
Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, who has been one of Nigeria’s standout performers in recent months, addressed the defeat in an emotional post on Instagram. The Chippa United shot-stopper admitted the loss was difficult to accept and apologized to supporters.
“Painful! We gave everything for the badge, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough,” he wrote. “Having been a fan myself, I understand the hurt this result brings. We take full responsibility.”
The defeat marks a major setback for Nigerian football, which now turns its attention to rebuilding ahead of upcoming international competitions.
