Real Madrid have dismissed Xabi Alonso as head coach, less than 24 hours after the club’s 3–2 defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Supercopa final.

The decision was confirmed in an official statement released by the club on Monday, bringing an abrupt end to Alonso’s tenure at the Santiago Bernabéu.

“Real Madrid CF announces that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to end his time as first-team coach,” the statement read.

The club paid tribute to the former midfielder, describing him as a legend whose legacy at Real Madrid remains intact.

“Xabi Alonso will always have the affection and admiration of all Madrid fans because he is a Real Madrid legend and has always represented the values of our club. Real Madrid will always be his home,” the statement added.

Real Madrid also expressed gratitude to Alonso and his technical crew for their service, wishing them success in their future careers.

The dismissal comes amid growing pressure on the former Spain international, with Real Madrid struggling for consistency in LaLiga and enduring an underwhelming campaign in the UEFA Champions League.

Alonso’s position appeared increasingly uncertain after his post-match comments following the Supercopa loss, where he described the competition as “the least important” tournament the club would contest this season—a remark that reportedly did not sit well with the club’s hierarchy.

Real Madrid’s decision to part ways with Alonso comes just two days before their next competitive fixture, a Copa del Rey Round of 16 encounter against Albacete, raising questions about the club’s immediate plans for interim or permanent managerial leadership.

An official announcement on Alonso’s successor is expected in the coming days.
