Erling Haaland was once again at the center of attention as Manchester City powered past Villarreal with a 2-0 win in Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League clash at the Estadio de la Cerámica. The Norwegian goal machine continued his incredible scoring run, netting his 22nd goal in just 12 consecutive matches for club and country. His effort helped Pep Guardiola’s side maintain their unbeaten start to the group stage and end a year-long winless streak away from home in Europe.
Manchester City started the game with total control, dominating possession and forcing Villarreal onto the back foot. Haaland came close to opening the scoring early when he headed wide from a Bernardo Silva cross, signaling the threat he posed. Just 17 minutes in, the inevitable happened. Youngster Rico Lewis combined neatly down the right and cut the ball back for Haaland, who blasted it home from close range to give City the lead.
Villarreal, who currently sit third in La Liga, tried to settle into the match but struggled to cope with City’s quick passing and relentless pressure. Their frustration deepened before halftime when Savinho whipped in a fine cross that found Bernardo Silva completely unmarked. The Portuguese midfielder calmly nodded the ball past Brazilian goalkeeper Luiz Junior to make it 2-0, effectively sealing the game before the break.
Guardiola made four changes from the side that beat Everton in the Premier League over the weekend, resting Phil Foden and rotating his midfield. The decision paid off as City controlled the tempo throughout the first half and looked composed defensively. However, there was a moment of concern when midfielder Nico Gonzalez went off injured before the hour mark, adding to City’s list of absentees with Rodri Hernandez already sidelined.
In the final 20 minutes, Villarreal showed more intent and came close to pulling one back. Nicolas Pepe tested Gianluigi Donnarumma with a fierce low drive, before heading and volleying off target in quick succession. Despite the late pressure, City’s defense remained composed. At the other end, Haaland continued to trouble the Villarreal backline but was denied a second goal by two excellent saves from Luiz Junior, who did well to keep the scoreline respectable.
With five minutes remaining, Guardiola introduced Omar Marmoush for his first appearance since August following a knee injury, giving the Egyptian forward some valuable minutes. Villarreal’s best chance of the night came right at the death when Renato Veiga’s header struck the post, narrowly missing the target as Donnarumma stood rooted to the spot.
The result means Manchester City remain unbeaten in the Champions League group stage and look poised for another deep run in the competition. Villarreal, on the other hand, continue to struggle under coach Marcelino García Toral, still searching for their first European win of the season after collecting just one point from their opening three matches.
