The Formula 1 world is buzzing with speculation that Lewis Hamilton could call time on his career sooner than many expected. After leaving Mercedes for Ferrari in what was billed as a blockbuster move, the seven-time world champion has endured a difficult season that has left him without a single podium finish.
Former driver and pundit Ralf Schumacher believes the signs are pointing toward retirement. Speaking on Sky Deutschland’s Backstaged Boxengasse podcast, Schumacher suggested Hamilton’s own frustrations — including calling himself “useless” after a disappointing outing in Hungary — reflect a deeper battle with confidence. According to Schumacher, when a veteran driver feels they have exhausted every option yet still fall short against their teammate, the question of “what’s next?” naturally arises.
Hamilton, now 39, faces a unique challenge at Ferrari. While Charles Leclerc has thrived, collecting five podiums this season, Hamilton continues to wrestle with a car that feels unfamiliar compared to his years at Mercedes. His struggles have raised doubts not only among fans and analysts but seemingly within himself. After Hungary, he even hinted Ferrari might be better off replacing him, a statement that shocked the paddock.
For Schumacher, the equation is simple. Hamilton is already one of the wealthiest athletes in the world, with strong business ties, fashion and music ventures, and even involvement in a Hollywood Formula 1 film project. Combined with the toll of relentless competition and the approach of his 40th birthday, Schumacher says it would not be surprising if Hamilton chooses to walk away at the end of the season.
Still, the door isn’t completely closed. Schumacher noted that in sports, a single breakthrough can reignite belief — comparing it to a footballer breaking a goal drought. If Hamilton manages a strong finish this season, he could yet rediscover his spark. But unless the results change soon, the Ferrari dream may turn into Hamilton’s final chapter in Formula 1.
