Nigerian-born American racing driver Ugo Ugochukwu has emerged champion of the Formula Regional Oceania Championship, sealing the title after a season marked by consistency and resilience.

The 18-year-old secured the trophy after finishing the campaign 15 points ahead of Audi-backed Freddie Slater, recording four victories in 15 races. Ugochukwu reached the podium at every round and finished outside the top 10 only twice throughout the season.

His championship charge was set in motion early, with back-to-back wins at Hampton Downs, a run that provided a decisive advantage as the title battle unfolded across New Zealand.

Ugochukwu completed the season with M2 Competition, overcoming late setbacks at the New Zealand Grand Prix, where a suspension failure disrupted qualifying. Although the team repaired the car in time, a subsequent technical infringement resulted in him starting the feature race from 13th on the grid.

Despite the setback, he secured enough points to clinch the championship.

Reflecting on the achievement, Ugochukwu described the title as a rewarding conclusion to a demanding season.

“It’s an amazing feeling to cross the line and secure the championship,” he said. “The season wasn’t easy, but the team did an incredible job, and I’m proud of what we achieved together.”

He added that the early momentum from Hampton Downs played a key role in shaping the rest of the campaign, allowing him to focus on consistency rather than risk-taking in the latter stages.

The Formula Regional triumph marks Ugochukwu’s first major title since parting ways with McLaren’s junior programme, following a restructuring of the Formula 1 team’s development lineup.

With the Oceania title secured, the young driver will now turn his attention to the FIA Formula 3 Championship, where he is set to begin his second season with Campos Racing.

Ugochukwu previously finished 16th overall in the 2025 F3 season with Prema Racing, recording two podium finishes. His 2026 Formula 3 campaign is scheduled to begin at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne from March 6 to 8.
