Max Verstappen has confirmed a change to the number he will carry on his Red Bull car in the 2026 Formula 1 season, opting for number three following the end of his four-year reign as world champion.
The Dutch driver had raced with the iconic number one from 2022 to 2025, a privilege reserved for the reigning champion. However, that status will pass to Lando Norris in 2026 after the McLaren driver clinched his maiden world title last season, finishing just two points ahead of Verstappen in a dramatic championship battle.
Rather than reverting to number 33, which he used throughout his early Formula 1 career with Toro Rosso and Red Bull, Verstappen has chosen to switch to number three. Recent amendments to Formula 1 regulations now allow drivers to change their permanent racing numbers, a flexibility that made the move possible.
Speaking to Viaplay, Verstappen explained the personal significance of the decision, noting that number three has always been his preferred choice. He added that while number 33 served him well, a single “three” now feels more fitting after achieving his major career milestones in the sport.
Red Bull Racing confirmed the change in a statement and revealed that Daniel Ricciardo, who previously raced with number three during his own time at the team, had given his approval for Verstappen to adopt the number.
Verstappen heads into the 2026 season aiming to reclaim the drivers’ title after narrowly missing out on a fifth consecutive championship, as Formula 1 prepares for a new era shaped by fresh regulations and renewed rivalries.
