Khamzat Chimaev finally fulfilled his long-awaited destiny on Saturday night, overpowering Dricus Du Plessis to capture the UFC middleweight championship at UFC 319 in Las Vegas. In a performance that showcased his relentless wrestling and suffocating ground control, Chimaev earned a one-sided unanimous decision, with all three judges scoring the contest 50-44.

From the opening seconds, the Chechen-born star set the tone with a lightning-fast takedown that pinned Du Plessis to the canvas. For nearly the entire first round, Chimaev locked his opponent in a crucifix position, unleashing steady strikes that kept the champion trapped. Although Du Plessis refused to be finished, the overwhelming control made it clear the fight would be contested on Chimaev’s terms.

The pattern continued across all five rounds. Every time Du Plessis tried to create space, Chimaev closed the distance, dragging him back to the mat and piling on more pressure. At one point in the second round, Chimaev secured back control and peppered the South African with punches while threatening submissions, leaving Du Plessis clinging to survival rather than mounting his own offence.

By the championship rounds, the defending champion looked visibly worn out. His only brief success came late in the fifth, when he landed a few shots in desperation, but it was far too little, far too late. Chimaev, composed and dominant, coasted to victory, leaving no doubt that the middleweight crown had a new owner.

After the fight, the 30-year-old newly crowned champion credited his relentless style to his training. “I don’t really come in with a game plan. I just do in the cage what I do in the gym,” Chimaev explained. He also paid tribute to Du Plessis’ resilience, saying, “He’s strong, I couldn’t finish him. He has the heart of a lion, a true African lion, and I respect him for that.”

Du Plessis, who suffered his first defeat as champion, showed humility in defeat. “He was better tonight. I’ve got no excuses,” he admitted. “He deserves it, and he should enjoy this moment. I’ll be back. I’ll take my belt again one day.”

With this victory, Chimaev not only claims UFC gold but also firmly establishes himself as one of the most dangerous forces in the middleweight division. His dominance raises questions about who could possibly stop him as he begins his reign at the top.
