Dutch athletics star Femke Bol made a stunning debut over 800 metres on Saturday night, breaking a 25-year-old national indoor record at the Athlélor meet in Metz, France.

The reigning world champion in the 400m hurdles delivered a commanding performance to win the race in 1:59.07, becoming the first Dutch woman to run under two minutes indoors in the event. The time eclipsed the long-standing national record and marked a memorable first outing for Bol at the distance.

Competing at the 18th edition of the Athlélor meet, Bol was closely watched as she tested herself beyond her usual sprint-hurdle discipline. She initially appeared cautious, opting not to follow pacemaker Anna Gryc, who led the field through the opening 400 metres in 56.66 seconds.

However, Bol gradually asserted control in the latter stages of the race. Despite a late challenge from Swiss athletes Valentina Rosamilia and Lore Hoffmann, the Dutch star maintained her composure and powered home to secure victory. Rosamilia finished second in 1:59.90, with Hoffmann close behind in third at 1:59.91.

Given Bol’s pedigree—highlighted by her world indoor 400m record of 49.17—the strong early pace posed little threat, and she appeared relaxed and controlled throughout the race.

The competition in Metz was slightly weakened by the late withdrawal of Slovakia’s Gabriela Gajanová, who pulled out due to illness. Gajanová, the Slovak record holder and 2024 European indoor silver medallist, was expected to provide a tougher test.

Bol’s impressive performance has sparked excitement within the athletics community as she explores new events. With such a commanding debut, attention will now turn to how far the versatile Dutch star can extend her dominance beyond her established disciplines.
