Israel Okon delivered a career-defining performance to win the men’s 100m title at the 2025 Nigerian Athletics Championships, marking his first senior national crown in a race that captured the attention of athletics fans across the country. The 18-year-old sprint sensation surged to victory with a time of 10.04 seconds (wind-assisted), narrowly edging out Alaba Akintola, who finished just a fraction behind in 10.05 seconds. Fakorede Adekalu claimed third place with a commendable 10.07 seconds, while seasoned sprinter Seye Ogunlewe crossed the line in fourth at 10.08 seconds.

Okon’s journey to the national title began with a remarkable statement of intent on the opening day of the competition. Running in his heat, the Auburn University student-athlete blazed to a new Personal Best (PB) and National U20 Record of 10.03 seconds. It was the fastest qualifying time of the day, setting him apart as the man to watch heading into the semifinal rounds. Okon carried his momentum seamlessly into the semifinals, where he once again dominated his field, posting a time of 10.06 seconds (+0.8m/s) to book his place in the final.

Despite the fierce competition, Okon remained composed and focused, even in the absence of his training partner and the defending national champion, Kanyinsola Ajayi, who withdrew from the championships ahead of the semifinals due to personal reasons. Without Ajayi in the mix, Okon seized the opportunity to step up and lead, showcasing not just his raw speed but also his mental toughness under pressure.

With this victory, Okon becomes Nigeria’s fifth different men’s 100m national champion in the last five years, following in the footsteps of Enoch Adegoke (2021), Favour Ashe (2022), Usheoritse Itsekiri (2023), and Kanyinsola Ajayi (2024). His win highlights the growing depth and competitiveness of Nigeria’s sprinting landscape, where a new champion has emerged every year, reflecting the relentless wave of young talents coming through the ranks.

Okon’s triumph also comes at a time when Nigerian sprinting is gaining momentum on the international scene. Just recently, a group of rising Nigerian sprinters dominated an international meet in Switzerland, completing a clean sweep of the podium in the men’s 100m event. This growing success both locally and internationally signals a promising future for Nigeria’s sprinting ambitions, with Okon now positioned as one of the nation’s leading prospects.
