Nigerian discus sensation Obiageri Amaechi has earned her ticket to the World Championships in Tokyo next month after delivering a career-best performance in Ramona. At the Oklahoma Throws Series, the 26-year-old threw an impressive 64.80 meters, not only smashing her previous personal best by nearly two meters but also surpassing the World Championships qualifying mark of 64.50 meters. Her mark places her as the second-best African woman in discus history, just behind Chioma Onyekwere-Lyons’ African record of 64.96 meters.
Amaechi’s rise this season reflects her remarkable consistency, with strong performances across multiple international meets. She has already claimed bronze at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, bronze at the 2022 African Championships, gold at the 2023 African Games, and silver at the 2024 African Championships.
Making her World Championships debut, Amaechi now aims to showcase her talent on the global stage, representing Nigeria among the world’s elite discus throwers. Her historic throw in Ramona cements her status as one of Africa’s top athletes and signals exciting prospects for the upcoming Tokyo event.
