British tennis star Katie Boulter suffered an early exit at the Pan Pacific Open after falling in straight sets to Germany’s Eva Lys in Tokyo on Monday. The 27-year-old was outplayed from start to finish as Lys secured a commanding 6-2, 6-1 victory in just over an hour.
Boulter, who came through qualifying to reach the main draw, was the only British player competing in the tournament following Emma Raducanu’s withdrawal due to illness. Her hopes of progressing were short-lived, however, as Lys ranked No. 44 in the world produced a clinical performance to advance to the next round.
The British No. 3 appeared off her usual rhythm and struggled to contain Lys’s aggressive baseline play. Despite flashes of resistance, Boulter couldn’t find the consistency that helped her reach Tokyo’s main draw just a day earlier, when she battled back from a set down to beat Kimberly Birrell 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (2) in the qualifiers.
This latest defeat adds to a challenging season for Boulter, who has faced mixed results on the WTA Tour. Still, she recently enjoyed one of her better moments with a notable victory over Linda Noskova in Osaka last week.
The loss in Tokyo, however, underscores the hurdles Boulter continues to face in maintaining consistency at the highest level of women’s tennis.
