Chelsea set a new Women’s Super League milestone on Sunday, extending their unbeaten run to a historic 34 matches. But despite the achievement, the champions left Merseyside frustrated after being held to a 1-1 draw by Liverpool — a result that further dents their title defence.
Sonia Bompastor’s side entered the weekend four points behind leaders Manchester City, who strengthened their grip on top spot by sweeping past Manchester United 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium a day earlier.
Thompson Strikes Early, Liverpool Hit Back
Chelsea made the perfect start when Alyssa Thompson curled a superb effort into the far corner inside nine minutes. The visitors appeared in full control, but Liverpool stunned them midway through the first half. Beata Olsson finished off a swift counter-attack in the 33rd minute to haul the hosts level.
Catarina Macario had a clear chance to restore Chelsea’s lead before the break, dragging her effort wide in a moment that foreshadowed the visitors’ afternoon of missed opportunities.
VAR Drama and Missed Chances Cost the Champions
Chelsea thought they had reclaimed the advantage in the 65th minute when Aggie Beever-Jones rounded goalkeeper Faye Kirby and tapped into an empty net. The celebrations quickly halted, however, as the forward was denied by an offside flag.
Beever-Jones came close again minutes later, sending a delicate lob just wide, while Chelsea continued to dominate territory and possession. Despite their pressure, Liverpool held firm, leaving the Blues with back-to-back 1-1 draws after last week’s stalemate with Arsenal.
Title Picture Shifts as Rivals Climb
The draw leaves Chelsea three points off Manchester City and four clear of Manchester United. Arsenal and Tottenham remain within reach in fourth and fifth place ahead of their North London derby later on Sunday.
Elsewhere, the London City Lionesses moved level on points with Spurs after a strong 3-1 victory at Aston Villa. Saki Kumagai netted twice and Isobel Goodwin added a third, with Kirsty Hanson replying for Villa.
Villa fell to eighth following Brighton’s impressive 4-1 win over Leicester City. Madison Haley, Maelys Mpome, Marisa Olislagers and Kiko Seike were all on target for Dario Vidosic’s side as Leicester slumped to a new league record — 21 consecutive away matches without a victory, surpassing Yeovil Town’s previous mark of 20.
West Ham Earn First Win of the Season
In the day’s other early kickoff, West Ham recorded their first league win of the campaign, climbing off the bottom of the table with a 3-1 triumph over Everton. Anouk Denton, Amber Tysiak and Shekiera Martinez struck for the Irons, while Katja Snoeijs provided a late consolation for Everton.
Data Debrief: A Historic Run Continues
Chelsea’s draw may have stalled their title push, but the club still rewrote the record books. Their 34-match unbeaten streak surpasses the previous WSL record of 33, which they also set between 2019 and 2021
